Clinical Value of the FoSOD

Requirements for Administration

Administration of the FoSOD is straightforward and can be carried out by individuals who do not have professional training in psychology or a related mental health field. An experienced professional examiner is preferred, but personnel with limited training in the use of psychological tests may administer and score the FoSOD after carefully reviewing the procedures detailed below. However, interpretation of FoSOD scores requires professional training in psychology, a related mental health discipline, or a history of working with sexual offenders. In keeping with policies specified in the 1999 Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing (co-developed by the American Psychological Association, the American Educational Research Association, and the National Council on Measurement in Education), it is important that a qualified professional be available to provide interpretation of FoSOD scores. The interpretation of the FoSOD should not be attempted without significant professional experience working with sexual offenders and sufficient understanding of the treatment guidelines established by the Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abusers ( 2001). Clearly, the utility and validity of the FoSOD as a clinical measure are directly related to the knowledge and experience of the professional who interprets the test scores.
